Sherwood Animal Services

A New Facility for Our Growing Community

Sherwood is committed to caring for its animals and the people who adopt them. That’s why one of the centerpiece projects of the Reimagine Sherwood campaign is the construction of a brand-new Animal Services facility on Johnson Drive.

Why a New Facility Is Needed

The current shelter on North Hills Boulevard is just over 4,500 square feet and was never designed to meet today’s needs. It lacks proper quarantine space, adoption areas, and modern medical facilities. With Sherwood’s population growing, the shelter has become overcrowded and outdated, limiting the care staff can provide and the number of animals that can be safely housed.

Planned Features

The new facility will be nearly 11,000 square feet, more than double the current size, and will provide:

  • 40 indoor/outdoor dog kennels (up from 24 at the current shelter)

  • Five cat housing rooms with outdoor catios

  • Dedicated quarantine areas for both dogs and cats

  • A surgery suite and exam room for on-site veterinary care

  • A grooming room to support animal health

  • Separate adoption areas for dogs and cats, improving the adoption process and visitor experience

Designed with Care

Cromwell Architects designed the facility using research, best practices, and input from shelter staff. Key improvements include better ventilation and heating systems, layouts that streamline staff workflow, and animal spaces that promote health, safety, and adoption success.

The new design also improves efficiency while saving money, an estimated $500,000 in construction costs compared to rebuilding at the current site.

Community Benefits

This project is more than a new building, it’s a long-term investment in public health, animal welfare, and community quality of life. The new shelter will:

  • Improve care for animals and increase adoptions

  • Provide a more accessible location in North Sherwood

  • Support staff efficiency and safety

  • Offer real estate for future growth and expansion

Estimated Cost

The cost of construction is approximately $11.5 million.
